An Ode to Bread

The harvest season has us thinking about baking. As the days crispen and nights lengthen, those of us in the Northern hemisphere begin to seek solace indoors. And is there a more comforting food than bread? Whether you bake your own or turn to the experts, we’re sharing our carb-loaded cache of Calgary’s bread offerings.

A good bread knife is a true joy. No more squashed loaves or cut fingers from applying too much pressure. And if you’re looking for your forever bread knife (or any knife), you can’t go wrong at Knifewear in Inglewood. The staff is so well-informed that your every question will be answered with information to spare. There’s a knife for every use and every budget. Remember: the right tool is a job half done.

Our favourite is the Tojiro, the sharp, serrated blade makes slicing through even the heartiest sourdough a breeze. The price is a bargain at $120, but if you’re looking for something  worthier of your best loaves, perhaps only the gorgeous Miyabi Birchwood with it’s beautiful handle and gorgeous striated Damascus stainless-steel blade will do. It’s $455 and, for the true knife aficionado, it’s a stunner.
