Celebrate 55 years of the Caesar Cocktail

In recognition of the Caesar cocktail’s 55th anniversary, The Westin Calgary presents Walter’s Pop-Up Bar.

Transport yourself back to 1969 with the Caesar cocktail, created by Walter Chell, the bar manager at the Calgary Inn, who was tasked with creating a beverage to honour the opening of a new Italian restaurant named Marco’s. Drawing inspiration from spaghetti alle vongole, a pasta dish made with clams, Chell meticulously perfected a cocktail made with clam nectar, vodka, tomato juice, and spices. His secret ingredient was a hint of oregano. While the original recipe has remained fairly consistent, present-day versions of this classic cocktail always include a dash or two of Tabasco. National Caesar Day happens annually on the Thursday before the Victoria Day (May) Long Weekend.

Four Caesars are available to order, all expertly paired with light bites that might include oysters, shrimp cocktail, beef tartare and charcuterie.

  • The Original Caesar: Savour the classic combination of Buckle Vodka, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco, topped with Clamato and garnished with pickle bean, lime, celery and pepperoni.
  • The Mexican Caesar: Jalapeno-infused tequila, Worcestershire sauce, Clamato, Tajin and celery salt rim, lime, topped with a roasted pineapple garnish.
  • Alberta Style Caesar: Features Crown Royal or Canadian Whisky, Worcestershire sauce, HP sauce, and spices. Served in a Mason jar with a BBQ spice rim, topped with Clamato and garnished with pepperoni and pickled bean.
  • Pickled Caesar: This flavourful twist on the class is a zesty blend served in a Mason jar with a Tajin rim. Made with Buckle Vodka, pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, and Clamato. Garnished with pickle, lime and lemon.

Drop into Walter’s Pop-Up Bar, in The Westin Calgary, Monday – Friday, 5-9 p.m. and celebrate Canada’s National drink.
