Pinot Noir is called ‘The Heartbreak Grape’ because of its difficulty to cultivate, susceptibility to disease and rot, and often frustratingly uneven ripening levels. If you even look at it ‘Sideways’, your crop might be lost. Yet for all the trials and tribulations that it can put vineyard managers and winemakers through, when it is done right, it can be utterly magical. That is why Pinot Noir is grown ’round the world and takes many forms: from still to sparkling and from budget-friendly to cellar-worthy.
