Taylor Fladgate releases a Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port from 2022
Quinta de Vargellas is one of the most famous wine estates in the Douro Valley and considered one of the great vineyards of the world. Located in the remote eastern part of the Upper Douro Valley, the estate is renowned for its elegant but long-lasting vintage ports, characterised by firm tannins, fine focused fruit and characteristic floral scent.
A dense backdrop of deep purple black colour with a narrow magenta rim and an exuberant, powerful, fresh blackcurrant and cherry nose is overlaid with an enchanting grapey freshness that builds as the nose develops. Woodland fruit, hints of plum and a kiss of citrus and quince provide the Vargellas signature – finesse, elegance and poise.
The floral scents which are also the hallmark of Vargellas are present, the characteristic violet fragrances intertwining with delicate blossom and herbal notes. As usual, with the Vargellas Single Quinta Vintage, these wines are beautiful enjoyed young, but will also age superbly in the cellar for many years to come.
St George’s Day falls on April 23rd annually and is traditionally when Fonseca announces whether it will make a new Vintage Port release.
Guimaraens Vintage Ports are made in certain years when a classic Fonseca Vintage is not declared. They are blended from the best produce of the firm’s Pinhão Valley estates, Cruzeiro and Santo António, and Fonseca’s flagship property, Quinta do Panascal, on the right bank of the Távora.
A distinctive magenta rim surrounds an opaque purple, almost black core. The nose opens with a surge of powerful and intense woodland berry aromas, rich and juicy with hints of cassis, blackberry and wild strawberries. Note of apricot emerge as the wine opens in the glass, followed by warmer notes of cedar, spice, dark chocolate and that opulent fruit character that defines the Fonseca style.
This is a seductive Vintage Port which is drinking beautifully now but has the depth and stamina to mature in the bottle. For more information visit Taylor Fladgate.
