Golden Cheddar and Red Pepper Savoury French Toast

This savoury French toast trades maple syrup for sharp cheddar, red pepper and garlic folded into the egg mixture.

As it cooks, the cheese melts and caramelizes against the bread, creating a crisp golden crust and a rich, savoury bite.

This twist on a classic breakfast favourite foregoes maple syrup for a deeply satisfying savoury experience. Instead of sweetened eggs, the bread is soaked in an egg mixture combined with sharp cheddar cheese, finely diced red bell peppers, herbs and spices. As the slices are seared in a pan, the cheese melts into the bread, creating a golden, crispy crust enclosing a pillowy, savoury French toast slice. Every bite is a perfect balance between the salty punch of aged cheddar and the subtle, fresh sweetness of the red peppers.

  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 cup grated old cheddar cheese

  • Add the cheese and mix with a fork.
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow baking dish or deep plate for dipping the bread.
  • Heat oil in a pan on low heat until hot.
  • Dip the bread to absorb the egg mixture, then turn over with a spatula to dip the other side.
