IBU Restaurant & Bar

A south Calgary restaurant is putting a personal spin on western and Asian flavours, led by the father-and-son team behind Expatasia.

Inspired by years spent living and cooking in Southeast Asia, the space pairs deeply rooted dishes with a thoughtful cocktail program and an intimate, design-led room.

IBU Restaurant & Bar

IBU Restaurant & Bar opened last fall, bringing a new expression of western and Asian cooking to south Calgary, shaped by the experience of father-and-son team Jeff and Joel Matthews, from Expatasia. The pair spent more than three decades in Southeast Asia, a region that informs both the menu and the restaurant’s moody, design-driven space. IBU, named in honour of Joel’s mother, features 65 seats across three dining areas, an open kitchen and a 45-seat patio. The menu draws from dishes the Matthews family cooked and ate abroad, with plates such as braised beef rendang and Ayam Pelalah lettuce wraps anchoring the offering. A strong cocktail list and chef’s table experience round out the restaurant’s approach. Open Tuesday-Sunday.
