Happiness by the Acre

Marcus and Sarah Riedner lived in Calgary where they worked in tech and experimented with urban farming. They loved it, so much they decided to move to the country. They now live with their children on a 153-acre farm near Didsbury north of Calgary.

Neither Marcus nor Sarah came from a farming background, but they say that gives them the chance to bring fresh new perspectives to the lifestyle. “We also face a huge learning curve and continual infrastructure builds,” they say. “When we purchased the farm it was being used for grain crops, with no roads, utilities or even fencing! It was like a blank slate for us.”

And with that blank slate in mind, they now operate an on-site farm store to showcase their products and local goods. It operates as a self-serve store, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the local community. It hasn’t all been easy, but the trade-off is worth it, says Marcus. “It is great to be out here near the grass and livestock,” he says, although he confesses he does miss the ability to order from Skip the Dishes and DoorDash.

As for his favourite products? “I think right now my fave products are our dill pickle jerky and dill pickle pepperoni—and, of course, our ribeye steaks.”
