If you work in the Manchester Industrial Park, you probably already know about the deli at the Calgary Italian Bakery. For the rest of you, this is an absolute must-visit hidden gem for lunch and your weekly bread shopping.
A family business since 1962, the Calgary Italian Bakery runs 24/7 to supply supermarkets, restaurants, seniors’ residences, schools and government facilities in Calgary and area with fresh, quality bread. Tucked in front of the 40,000 square-foot bakery, you’ll find the boutique outlet store and deli where you can grab a delicious Italian sub and some fantastic bread at a great price (two loaves for $5 on Sundays and three for $5 on Mondays).
We popped in for lunch and enjoyed a delicious sub with fresh black forest ham, mortadella, mozzarella and provolone with crisp veggies on a bun with the most satisfying chew. We also picked up a few loaves of the Calgary Italian Bakery’s signature Famiglia line of breads. Created as an homage to founders Luigi and Myrl Bontorin, the Famiglia line was born with the belief that Calgarians deserved better bread, made with love and ingredients you could pronounce. Today, the couple’s sons David and Louis continue to run the business with the same dedication to quality local ingredients. We love the hearty, healthy and delicious sunflower flax loaf. The deli and outlet store are open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
