City & Country Urban Winery, Calgary’s only urban winery, has released its first wines — red, white and rosé — in cans this year.

Chris Fodor, winemaker and owner of City & Country, has wanted to put his wines in cans for a decade or so. “However, standard aluminum cans are often unsuitable for wine quality,” he says, because wines have a low pH level, which can cause the aluminum to corrode.

But when he found out about PET plastic, he had his solution. These lightweight, durable containers are ideal for hiking, camping or backyard barbecues, he says. “It significantly reduces weight and you never have to worry about forgetting the glassware.”
